Event Information

The Joondalup Autumn Classic Run-Swim-Run event will take place on on Staurday 14 March 2020.  

This great classic Run-Swim-Run event format is suitable for all age groups including novices.  For 2020 the Joondalup Autumn Classic will host the Triathlon Western Australia Aquathlon State Championships over the standard distance of 2.5km Run - 1km Swim - 2.5km Run. 

In the multisports industry the Run-Swim-Run format is often referred to as an Aquathlon which can vary in sequence and distance.

  • For 2020 we also introduce the Enduro Sprint - fast but fun with an elimination format!  This race is free to registered Short and Long course entrants.

  •  This event will continue to feature the Schools Aquathlon Championships where students will battle it out to become the overall champions!!!

  • There will also be a trophy up for grabs as part of the Clubs Aquathlon Challenge where Triathlon and Surf Life Saving Clubs will fight it out to be crowned the overall JA Classic Aquathlon champions.

General Race Information

Date:  Saturday 14th March 2020 
Start Time:  7:45am

Location:   Start/Finish at Mullaloo Beach, Mullaloo, Joondalup WA

Race Distances

Tin Lids (Trystars) –  500m Run / 150m Swim / 500m Run

  • Junior 7 to 11 years

Juniors – 1km Run / 500m Swim / 1km Run

  • Junior 12 to 15 years

Seniors Short Course – 1km Run / 500m Swim / 1km Run

  • Junior 12 to 15 years

  • Junior 16 to 19 years - suitable for all junior and junior elite athletes 16 -19 years

  • Novice - suitable for all beginner and novice athletes 12 years and older

Seniors Long Course (incorporating WA State Championships) – 2.5km Run / 1km Swim / 2.5km Run

  • Junior 16 to 19 years - suitable for all junior and junior elite athletes 16 -19 years

  • Open/Senior - Individual

1500m swim Challenge

  • Juniors 14+ yrs and Seniors

Enduro Sprint – 500m Run / 150m Swim / 500m Run / 150m Swim / 500m Run (Elimination format)

  • Junior 12 to 15 years

  • Junior 16 to 19 years and junior elite athletes 16 -19 years

  • Open/Senior - Individual

  • Teams Sprint Race(of at least two members or more of single or mixed gender)

Course Format

Run-Swim-Run races the format will be:

  • Run  - 1 x lap

  • Swim - 1 x lap (2x lap for Long Course WA State Championship, Note - Competitors will need to exit the water, cross a lap timing mat and re-enter on each lap.)

  • Run  - 1 x lap

Enduro Sprint Format

  • Run 1 x lap,  Swim 1 x lap, Run 1 x lap, Swim 1 x lap, Run 1 x lap

  • This race will follow an elimination format and between 10-20% of the rear of the field will be eliminated after each leg!  The elimination percentage will be based on the number os starters!

Course Terrain 

Note: - The run legs are both along Mullaloo Beach and swim is in the beautiful ocean.  As the event is all on the beach you will have the option to run bare foot or in shoes.  Competitors will be able to navigate the run on soft or firmer hard sections of the beach as desired.  A designated transition area is provided on the run-out lap to dispose of or put on shoes.

Swim Challenge Format

  • The Swim Challenge will be a 3 x 500m lap..  Competitors will need to exit the water, cross a lap timing mat and re-enter on each lap.

Registration Pickup

Registration pickup/bag collection (numbers, timing chip, swim cap) will be available at the following dates and times:

  • Friday 13th March 2020 -  From 10am to 4pm at XTR Multisports, Royce Court, Joondalup

  • Saturday 14th March 2020 - From 6:45am to 8:00am on race day at the Start/Finish area Mullaloo Beach (on the beach opposite the Surf Club)  

 Please ensure you have registered and collected your swim cap, timing chip band withn the times indicated above.  Also ensure that both your arms marked with your race number on race morning.  This will be available during registration on race morning.

Bag Drop

A bag drop area is available on race day and will be located in the recovery area at the finish.   Please note that is not controlled so competitors leave their bag at their own risk.
 

Race Briefing

Race briefings will be held 10 minutes prior to each wave start near transition and the starting area on Mullaloo Beach. 

Wave Categories

Athletes will have a choice of entering the standard Open (Elite)  Age Group and Parariathlete waves.  Initial wave divisions and and start times are listed below and subject to change based on entry numbers.

  1.   7:45 - Kids  - 7 to 11 yrs Male/Female  (Swim cap - tba)

  2.   8:00 - Short - Juniors 12 to 15 yrs Male/Female. (Swim cap - tba)

  3.   8:05 - Short - Senior/Novice 16+ yrs Male/Female. (Swim cap - tba)

  4.   8:30 - Long Course (WA State Championships) - Open & Male Age Groups. (Swim cap - tba)

  5.   8:31 - Long Course (WA State Championships) - Open Female & Female Age Groups. (Swim cap - tba)

  6.   8:35 - 1500m swim Challenge - Juniors 14+ yrs and Seniors Male/Female. (Swim cap - tba)

  7.   9:30 - Enduro Sprint - Juniors and Senior 14+ yrs Male/Female. (Swim cap - tba)


 

Presentations

All presentations will take place at approximately 8:40am (Kids), 10:00 (Short, Long, Swim and Enduro) onwards at the finish area. The presentations times are subject to change and will start earlier if ahead of schedule. 
 

Race Divisions

Participants will participate in one of the following categories:

  • Kids -  7-11 Yrs

  • Juniors -  12-15 Yrs, 16-19 yrs

  • Short - 16-19 Yrs,  20-24 yrs,  25-29 Yrs. . . . . 65-69,  70+

  • Long  -  Open(Elite)16-19 Yrs,  20-24 yrs,  25-29 Yrs. . . . . 65-69,  70+  (WA State Aquathlon Championship 20Yrs+)

  • Enduro Sprint  -  12-15 Yrs, 16-19 Yrs,  20-24 yrs,  25-29 Yrs. . . . . 65-69,  70+ , Teams

 

Note:

  • Age is calculated in align to TA policy as at 31st of December 2020.

  • *Open Category entries are subject to approval by the organisers and Triathlon WA.


Prizes

Place medals will be awarded to:

  • **Long Course (Open/Elite) - 1st (Medal & $150), 2nd (Medal & $100), 3rd (Medal & $75), male and female - for Open Category places  (Note - must be a current financial TWA annual member)

  • **Long course (Age Group) - 1st, 2nd and 3rd male, female and 1st Paratri male, female WA State Championship Age Group winners - WA State Sprint Championship Place Medals, (Note - must be a current financial TA and TWA annual member)

  • Enduro Sprint - 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female and 1st Team (all team formats and gender mix)

  • Senior short course - 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female

  • Junior short course - 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female

  • Swim Challenge - 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall

  • Tin Lids (Kids 7-11Yrs) - medals to all finishers

 

Schools Aquathlon Champions 2020 

Schools will be able to claim glory as the Schools Aquathlon Champions 2020 under the following categories:

  • Fastest School Trophy - based on top 5 performances for Kids 7 - 11 years

  • Fastest School Trophy - based on top 5 performances for Junior 12 - 15 years/Short course

  • Most represented school Trophy

 

Club Challenge Champions

  • Club Challenge Champions 2020  - will be awarded to the fastest club based on top ten performances in the long course. 

**Note:  For the Long course race in 2020, while the event is open for all to. enter, only current 2019/2020 Triathlon WA affiliated annual members will be valid for WA State Championship placing status/awards and any associated cash prizes. .   This applies to both Open/Elite and Age Group Awards.   For 2020 WA State Championship placing medals will be awarded to both Open/Elite and Age Group podium winners 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

While Non-affiliated entries will be required to purchase a Triathlon Australia one day race licence (ODL) the purchase of an ODL is not a substitute for a Triathlon Australia and Triathlon WA annual membership and the associated entitlements, including validity for WA State Championship placing status/awards.

Note:  All lucky draw prizes on the day are only valid if your race number is drawn and you are personally present to receive the award at the prize giving on race day.  Lucky draw prizes for entrants not present at the race day prize giving will be invalid and their will be a re-draw for that prize.

Parking

Parking will be available next to Tom Simpsons park at Mullaloo beach and also along the main beachside road Oceanside Promenade.  As it is a popular location it is recommended to arrive early to ensure a spot and allow plenty of time for registration. Please be aware that all parking regulations enforced by the Council will apply throughout the course of the event so please refer to their parking signs for more details.

Participants and supporters should take note of restrictions in regard to access to the beach via designated walkways and not enter dunes areas – please refer to and take note of the appropriate access signs.
